Two-Day Bake Sale

On Wed Feb 3rd and Fri Feb 5th, LISA will be holding a bake sale on campus!

Wed Feb 3 = First-floor Katz; 9am-4pm
Fri Feb 5 = HMRC Bridge; 9am-4pm

All proceeds go to the Canadian Liver Foundation for education and research at the U of A campus.

January 15th 2010 Meeting Minutes

These days/locations were requested by Nadia at the Exams & Timetabling office for the bake sale: 

Wed Feb 3- Tory/Business

Bake Sale Discussion

·         Location Suggestion: Katz = a lot of the Tim Hortons people, do it on the second floor

o   2nd floor of med sci, medical secretary. = Nadia will ask on Monday

o   Wed Feb 3rd

·         U of A hospital cafeteria- Ask Carmen for contact information

·         CEB = lot of people; kind of close to CAB?

·         Wednesday = sponsorship letter by email!

 

January 22nd = Volunteer Appreciation Party; thank volunteers that were with us; welcome new people

·         Pizza  73= “no” (need to ask corporate head office)

·         Shahna: UA Wise uses Panago (maybe discounted) for food

·         Book a room for party

·         Try Sobeys or other locations for food too

 

-Next Meeting 2:30-3:30; Volunteer appreciation at 5:00pm = January 22nd

 

March Liver Health Month

Yoga

·         Maleeha knows a doctor who could be the instructor

·         Issue with event idea: It will be difficult getting people to come to a room in the butterdome for an event. It's hard enough getting people to get involved in a high-traffic area. Maybe something else?

·         Explained idea to those present. Taylor said last meeting he will look into the athletic department part - will have to follow-up with him.

·         Ask Carmen for gaming licence

 Hot chocolate/Freezes/Juice

o   Percolators/coffee supply store!

o   Freezees/Icees if too warm

Movie Night

·         A day that SU isn’t doing? Ask SGS

·         Ask about popcorn machine

·         SUBStage = Cost associated?

·         Rent a classroom? Ask prof to rent? Issue with classroom: getting people to come.

I.              Welcome back!

II.            Involvement Fair

     a.    Still some morning shifts left

     b.    Someone with a key needs to be there morning/afternoon = Nadia

III.           Feb Bake Sale

     a.    ETLC? Jonathan will chekc for bake sale on  Feb 3 or 10

          ii.    HMRC Feb 5 or 8

IV.          Next wed!

     a.    Hand out sponsor letters next week so we get an answer this time!

     b.    Feb 15th = meeting day we get sponsor info roles etc

V.           SU  ads

     a.    Check forms! We decided that this will be more useful to use for the March Liver Month events, since SU is only giving out the ad space based on need and event.

Next meeting: 2:30-3:30pm, Jan 15th

VI.          March Liver Week

     a.    Our major event – not sure how many days we can book tables in SUB, will have to ask

     b.    Just think of ideas – we’ll discuss it next meeting

             i.    Wii event – didn’t like? 

                         ii.    Yoga – room that people use! Used for fitness instruction classes

              1.    Door prizes, sponsorship

              2.    Instructor?

              3.    Sponsor for drinks etc = Capital Health  can we give away free food???

                iii.    Exercise bicycles – rent from a company? Get sponsorship

c.    50/50 – during an athletic event! In combination! During liver health month!

November 13th Meeting Minutes:

November 25th Event: 11am-3pm

  • All member send a couple of liver health facts to Jennifer, she will put together a sheet with one side of liver facts and the other with LISA info that we can add to the candy canes
  • Liver facts due by Tues 6pm, Sheet Wed to Carmen
  • $10 Costco- Ask Mike to buy candy canes
  • People can spin wheel "by donation"
  • Other supplies: hole puncher (Lina), scissors (Nadia), string/ribbon (Jen)
  • Carmen: liver wheel (with 10 questions sheet), clf roll-up banner, (we'll hang on to the table cloth)
  • Nadia: Alternate liver health questions sheet

November 6th Meeting Minutes:

Bake Sale

  • Thank you letters to be sent to sponsors - Mike, Lina, Nadia
  • Raised: $236; Carmen deposited it
  • Suggestion to make one "go-to" person for next sale, to make it easier to handle; improve communication
  • Sponsorship: we did our part, recession made it difficult to get some sponsors
  • Make the point that we are a charity more prominant: use CLF roll-up banner next time
  • Suggestion: banana bread; asked by many
  • People also asked what was baked and what was bought
  • UofA Hospital is high traffic area - can we sell there instead? We have done a daisy and chocolate sale there in the past...

November Event

  • Crafts (Lina): booth in high-traffic area like SUB; pay $1 for IKEA photo frame; decorate; send picture; OR christmas decorations
  • Wii Sports (recall last year)
  • Can we sell food in SUB? Candy canes and christmas cookies?
  • Liver Quiz & Health promotion - give away candy canes to those that answer correctly - how much do they cost? Can we get sponsors?
  • Add a little sheet of paper with liver facts on one side and LISA info on the other; add it with a string
  • Sell squishy livers too ($1?)
  • Nadia: will ask about selling candy canes/cookies in SUB, and ask Carmen about liver wheel quiz for event
  • UPDATE: Safeway has 100 small candy canes for $3.99 a box, and 12 big ones for $1.99 a box

October 9th Meeting Minutes:

I.                    October Bake Sale

a.       Sponsors – VP (External) Mike Bao

                                                               i.      Stephanie will try to find list from previous years and send it to us.

                                                             ii.      Mike will be go-to person – contact him so that we don’t have two people going to the same location

                                                            iii.      Nadia will send out sponsorship letters that you can edit and put your own name on

                                                           iv.      By next Friday try to do initial contact with all sponsors

                                                             v.      Possible sponsor suggestion: Cupcake place on Whyte Ave (Fuss)

b.      Location – TBA

                                                               i.      Tentatively: Wed Oct 28 at the Tory/ Business Atrium, Fri Oct 30 at HMRC Bridge

c.       Shift schedule

IV.                CLF Derk’s coupon – any way to promote it?

a.       Med student association – send them out electronically to them;

b.      Contact high school grad councils; send them coupon upon request.

V.                  (SGS) Groups for Groups! "What can you offer? If your student group can offer some kind of service to other groups in exchange for their services or for a donation, let us know and we\'ll let groups know. FYI, the Student Design Association can offer graphic design work for student groups interested in creating a logo for themselves, re-vamping their clubs fair trifold, creating eye-catching posters, and more. Bake Sale Ideas – by our advertising/media guy, Jonathan

·         Decorate items for bake sales

·         Inflate volume with air or water – makes for better appearances

·         Use a table cloth (not plastic) – checkered/plaid!

·         Go for crazy designs/colors on products

·         Use less precious materials to inflate products.

·         Have food uncovered – Check Capital Health

·         Cheap plates to put the items on the table

o   Tupperware or platters to make it look better

·         Fundamental techniques:

o   (1) Meringue: egg-whites whipped into blob; cream of tartar

o   (2) Rolled Fondant:

o   (3) Stages of cooking sugar

o   (4) Poured Fondant

o   (5) Choux Pastry – cabbage shaped pastry

o   (6) Something that took Jonathan a year to make – name?

September 11 '09 Meeting Minutes

Brochure/Advertisement
·         Those who are interested in designing the brochure or advertising could work with Jonathan
·         The Brochure is targeted towards youth

Golf Giveaway
·         Tickets are sold for $2 each
·         Health information are being given out at the tables as well
·         Squishy liver are available for sale
·         People can also opt to contribute through donation

Responsibility
·         Each volunteer is responsible for the events that he/she signed up for. In the case of emergency or time conflicts, volunteers are accountable for seeking another volunteer to fulfil his or her shift.

·         Encourage recipe that could promote liver health

Grant
·         Student Union could offer grants ranging from $2500 up to $5000.
·         Student clubs are only eligible to double the grant from $2500 to $5000 if at least two executive members of the club attend the Leadership Conference, which is going to take place on the 25th of September, 09 (Friday) and 26th of September, 09 (Saturday).

·         28/10 for Tory and 30/10 for HMRC Bridge

November 25: Pre-Final Stress Buster
·         Work with Yoga Club or Origami Folding Club
·         Possible venue and time: area with curtains near the Pavilion in Butterdome at 10 am til 3 pm
·         Contact fitness centre through Phy. Ed people and see if we could lower the cost

·         Bake on our own to cut down cost and increase revenue!

·         Mar 22: Health Info Session with Guest Speaker
o   Instead of giving a lecture style session, we could consider adding the research aspect to this info session
o   Could invite professors who were given grants by the Liver Foundation to talk about possible research opportunities or even invite retiring professors
o   Could invite individuals who suffered from liver diseases to share their experience
o   N.B Royal Alexandra Hospital also has a speaker series so we have to ensure that ours is different
·         Mar 24: Noon-hour fitness session (10-3)
·         Mar 25: Movie night (SUB Stage)
o   Fundraise by setting up a concession stand selling popcorns, etc.

Reference Letters
·         VP – campus affair is responsible for writing reference letters
·         Volunteers could also ask Carmen or Nadia to write reference letters

Ideas
·         With two bake sales planned for the term, we could change one of the bake sale to some other more novel event, such as raffle tickets sale
o   Look for sponsors
o   Could ask Sonic radio for available concert tickets
·         Could target the residence on campus
o   Events such as gingerbread house or sushi cooking could increase exposure of our group (could work with Nutrition Students again)
o   Give out health information at events (Brochure!)
·         Boxing Day Draw/ Raffle
o   Give out something that we can buy cheaper on boxing day

Next year’s election
·         Members in good standing by the end of the year could run for next year’s office again
·         Executive members who are inefficient and irresponsible could be impeached and replaced by another member with a vote of non-confidence

Presented by the Liver Info Students’ Association (LISA). LISA is a volunteer run official chapter of the Canadian Liver Foundation and a University of Alberta Students’ Group.
Band INFORMATION

The CLF Band of the Year (2009): Theskylife

Prizes for the winning band include:

·         Gift certificate from Turn Key Studios for the recording of 1 song (worth approx $1000)

·         Gift certificate from BL Compositions for composition or advice on 1 - 5 minute song (worth approx $1000)
