Eat Right and Be Active
Risks
Being inactive or eating too much unhealthy food can damage your liver and put you at the same risk as drinking too much alcohol.- Fat from your diet is usually processed by your liver and other tissues. If the amount of fat and calories exceeds what is required by the body, it is stored in fatty tissue.
- Fatty liver disease is a result of the build-up of fat deposits in the liver. This can lead to inflammation, cirrhosis and even liver cancer.
- Although fatty liver disease can be caused by other things (alcohol, genetics, chemicals, malnutrition, etc.), it is most often related to obesity.
- Children now have fatty liver disease, mostly because of the rise in childhood obesity.
- You may have fatty liver disease and show no symptoms.
Prevention
- Choose a healthy lifestyle.
- Eat a well-balanced diet that is low in saturated fats and high in fiber.
- Introduce exercise into your routine. Even simple things like walking, rollerblading or riding your bike are great ways to get out there.
- If you are overweight, lose weight gradually. Crash diets and losing weight really quickly will be very hard on your whole body, including your liver.
