**See the Events page for upcoming volunteering opportunities and past meeting minutes!**

If you are a University of Alberta student who would like to get some volunteer experience, we have an easy way for you to get involved!

LISA is a group of dedicated volunteers working to spread the word about health living and how to prevent liver disease. Gaining volunteer experience while studying for your career is a great way to build your resume, to broaden your skills and experiences, and it looks great on your applications for medicine, graduate, or  other professional programs. We also provide reference letters to dedicated volunteers for those same programs.

How you can volunteer with LISA:*

*[We understand that most volunteers are full-time students at the university, and thus try to avoid meetings and events during exam periods. We only encourage volunteers to take on as much as they can handle without compromising their academic careers. However, we do expect volunteers to complete tasks and shifts that they commit to or provide enough notice for those tasks/shifts to be completed by another volunteer.]

LISA projects include displays on campus, the development of educational materials and a video for youth, and fundraising for liver health education and research– we do it all, and learn a lot along the way.

The group meets on campus once every week or two to work on different projects. Meetings are announced via email.

Martin Luther King Jr. once said “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?” There are lots of reasons to volunteer for a charity; someone close has been affected, friends and co-workers make it sound fun, you find it fulfilling to help others, you want to set an example. No matter the reason; volunteers are a valuable group and are appreciated by the charities they assist.

Listed below are different ways to help at the CLF:

Office Assistance. With a small office of two, there is the need for occasional help to get mail campaigns out, tax receipts printed, donations recorded, and documents filed. This is sporadic work, which is done during regular office hours.

Awareness Campaign Volunteers.
Melissa Johnson, the Health Promotion Coordinator for Northern Alberta is always looking for volunteers that can help her with education presentations, displays and information sessions. Training is provided.

Event Volunteers. Prior to an event and even the day or evening of an event, volunteers are an extremely valuable resource. Volunteers are needed to help pick up donations, distribute promotional material, assist with set-up, tear-down and various jobs during an event.

Planning Committee Members.
Prior to any fundraising event there are plans and contacts to be made. An event planning committee assists with those details. Committees will discuss sponsorship, costs, promotions, printed material, prizes and more.  The frequency of meetings varies.

If any of these positions interest you, please download the volunteer application and return it to Carmen at cb.liver@shaw.ca. We will then contact you to book your interview.

Why become an organ donor?

Organ and tissue transplantation is a modern medical miracle through which thousands of lives are saved or enhanced each year. For organ and tissue donors and their families, it is a chance to give life and a chance to help others at a time when it may seem that so much has been taken away.  For recipients, it is life.

Liver transplantation is a life-giving operation that replaces a diseased liver with a healthy, donated liver. In Canada, over 300 such transplants are performed every year.

Modern medicine and improved surgical techniques have increased survival rates for recipients, but the need for organs and tissues remains greater than ever. Many people have to wait years for a transplant operation, and some people may die before a suitable organ can be found.

You can make a difference. By deciding to become a donor, you are choosing to someday offer someone the promise of a brighter future.  Sign an organ donor card, or discuss this with your family.

Albert Einstein said that “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.”

There are lots of ways to do that: volunteer, make someone smile... but you can also make a donation to a charity you believe does good work, or a charity that has helped you in any way. Due to the lack of government funding, charities rely on individuals to help keep their doors open.

The size of your donation does not matter. The number of times you are able to make a donation does not matter. Making the donation and showing your support matters. It matters because it will help keep the Canadian Liver Foundation education and awareness programs running. It also matters because you have made a difference!
